Considered one of the U.S. identified 4 nuclear-affected atolls in the Marshall Islands, the people of Utrōk are not as well-known as their countrymen from Bikini, Enewetak, or Rongelap. Nevertheless, the people from Utrōk suffered immeasurable harm from the U.S. nuclear tests. Glenn Alcalay, an anthropologist, lived on Utrōk in 1974-1975 as a Peace Corps volunteer and shared the following photos. We provide them here to offer a glimpse of the lives and faces of the people of Utrōk in those years.
